Which components of my car can I recycle?

When scrapping your car, you may be wondering if there are any parts that can be recycled. This question is becoming more and more common, especially given the increasing awareness surrounding climate change and global warming. As it turns out, there are many components in your car that can easily be recycled. Let's take a closer look at some of these below.

Scrap metal

From copper and brass to aluminium and stainless steel, most scrap metal can be reused or recycled. The recycling centres who work with Motorwise recycle any scrap components that can't be reused so they can be utilised in other ways, such as for computer components.

Tyres

Throughout a car’s lifetime, it will have several sets of tyres. This means that when it comes to scrapping the car – or simply just changing the tyres – it can be difficult to know what to do with the used ones. Previously, tyres were burnt, but the smoke created carried too many toxic chemicals and the fires were also difficult to extinguish. Today, tyres are recycled and the rubber is used for other purposes, such as road surfacing.

Batteries

Car batteries are the most common components of cars that are recycled. Just an ordinary battery can cause a lot of damage when sent to landfill (they start to rot away and leak chemicals into the ground), so think about what a car battery would do! To prevent this, our recycling teams at Motorwise check and remove the batteries from every scrap car.  If it's in a safe and working condition, it may be sold on so it can be used again.

Plastic

Plastic is a common material in the construction of cars. It forms much of the dashboard, for example. However, plastic isn't a biodegradable material, which means that it's important for the environment that we recycle as much of it as possible. At Motorwise, plastic is broken down into small beads so it can be used to make new products.

Carpeting

It's possible to recycle all elements of a carpet, which is why the recycling centres' working with Motorwise remove all carpets and mats before a car is scrapped.
