How to Prepare Your Car for Scrap Collection - A Complete Checklist
Once you've decided to scrap your car and booked a collection, there are several things you should do before the driver arrives. Proper preparation ensures smooth collection, protects you legally, and means you won't accidentally lose personal belongings or important documents. Here's everything you need to do before your car is collected.
What documents do I need for scrap car collection?
The most important document is your V5C logbook (vehicle registration certificate). You'll need to give the 'new keeper' section to the collection driver and keep the V5C/2 yellow slip for your records. If you've lost your V5C, you can still scrap your car, but you'll need photo ID and proof of address. Some services may ask for additional documentation to verify ownership.
Should I remove personal belongings before collection?
Absolutely. Thoroughly check every part of your vehicle before collection: the glovebox, door pockets, under seats, boot compartments, sun visors, and any storage areas. People commonly forget sunglasses, phone chargers, parking permits, toll tags, and garage door openers. Check the boot for tools, warning triangles, and first aid kits you might want to keep. Once the car leaves, retrieving forgotten items becomes extremely difficult.
Do I need to remove the number plates before scrapping?
No, you don't need to remove your number plates before scrap collection. The Authorised Treatment Facility will handle plate removal as part of the depollution process. However, if you have a personalised or private registration you want to keep, you must transfer it to another vehicle or put it on retention with the DVLA before the car is scrapped. Once the vehicle is destroyed, the registration goes with it permanently.
Should I drain the fuel before scrap collection?
No, leave any remaining fuel in the tank. The ATF will drain all fluids as part of the legal depollution process. Attempting to drain fuel yourself is dangerous and unnecessary. Some drivers actually prefer a small amount of fuel in the tank as it makes moving the vehicle easier if it's a runner. Don't fill up before collection, but equally don't worry about running it empty.
Do I need to cancel my car insurance before scrapping?
Contact your insurance company to cancel your policy once collection has been completed. Most insurers will provide a pro-rata refund for any remaining months. Don't cancel too early - you need insurance until the moment the vehicle leaves your possession. Some people wait until they have their Certificate of Destruction before cancelling, which provides proof the car is no longer their responsibility.
What about road tax when scrapping a car?
Road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty) is automatically refunded for any full months remaining when the DVLA is notified your car has been scrapped. Once your vehicle has been collected, you must notify DVLA that you have scrapped the vehicle by using the yellow tear off slip on the V5C. Any refund due will be sent to the registered keeper's address automatically. You don't need to do anything separately, but ensure your address with the DVLA is current.
Should I clean the car before collection?
There's no need to clean or valet your car before scrap collection - it's about to be dismantled, so presentation doesn't affect the price. However, a quick check through the interior to find personal items is much easier in a relatively tidy car. Focus on removing your belongings rather than making the car look presentable.
What if my car doesn't start or drive?
Non-running vehicles are collected regularly - this isn't a problem. However, you need to ensure the driver can access the car and load it onto their truck. Clear any obstacles blocking access, ensure there's space for a recovery vehicle to manoeuvre, and if the car is in a garage, unlock and open the doors beforehand. If your car is in a difficult location, mention this when booking so appropriate equipment can be arranged.
What should I check on the collection day?
When the driver arrives, verify they're from the company you booked with and check their ID if you're unsure. Before they leave, ensure you receive a receipt or collection note confirming the vehicle has been taken. You should receive your Certificate of Destruction within a few days - this is your proof the car was legally scrapped. Keep this document safely; it protects you if any issues arise later.
What happens after collection?
After your car is collected, the ATF will process it according to environmental regulations. Your payment will be made according to whatever arrangement was agreed - usually bank transfer on collection or within a few days. Once you have your copy CoD, the process is complete and you have no further responsibilities for the vehicle.
