Can you still scrap your car if it has a personalised number plate?
Many people choose to invest in a personalised number plate for their car, but what happens to that number plate when you decide to scrap your car? You have some options open to you, depending on what you want to do with the plate.
What if you don't want to keep it?
If you don't want to keep the personalised number plate you have, you don't have to do anything. You can just organise the collection of your scrap vehicle as normal, and the plate will stay with the car as it's scrapped. Be aware that the scrapped car will still carry that registration, so you will not be able to use it for another vehicle once the plate has been recorded as scrapped.
What if you do want to keep it?
Owners often invest considerably into getting the exact personal plate they want, so it's more than likely you won't want the plate to stay with the car you're scrapping. Can you keep the number plate, but still scrap the car?
The simple answer is yes! You have a couple of options open to you. The first thing you can do is simply transfer the plate to another vehicle. If you already have the new vehicle that you intend to use, you can take the personalised plate off your old car and transfer it to your new one. The other option you have is to place your number plate on retention, which means it will still be available for you to use. This is the better choice if you don't have a new car to transfer it to yet. You can do this quite simply by filling in a V314 form and sending it back to the DVLA.
Make your decision in advance
Whatever you decide to do with your personalised number plate, whether you intend to let it go with your scrap car or you want to keep it to transfer it to something else, make your decision well in advance of arranging for your scrap car to be collected.
Your vehicle scrap service won't be willing to take your vehicle unless you have made your decision. If they arrive on the scheduled date and you still want to keep the plate but haven't made the appropriate arrangements, they may refuse collection and you will be charged a wasted journey fee.
